Sunflowers

Filed under: Garden, Plants, Sunflowers — admin @ 11:51 pm

Yesterday I planted Sunflowers on the strip we had Jim till along the edge of the meadow bordering the road. 1 packet of Mammoth Grey Stripe, two packets of Sunflower Sampler and a packet of Goldfinger Mexican Sunflower.

We got a little rain, but not much at all. Some more would be nice. Oh, and the grass needs cutting. What a surprise.

New Bees

Filed under: Bees — admin @ 7:45 am

We picked up the new bee nuc yesterday too – everything went well when I set them up – I’ll add a second brood chamber in a few days. I don’t have the frames wired and fitted with foundation yet.

Potatoes

Filed under: Garden, Potatoes — admin @ 7:43 am

Forgot to mention yesterday I put in four rows of potatoes: Austrian Crescent (bought from Fedco), and three from our own seed potatoes; Ozette, Green Mountain and Purple Peruvian. Only six more rows to do in the new plot Jim tilled for us.

Cucumbers and weeds

Filed under: Cucumbers, Garden — admin @ 7:34 am

The garden really does have a lot of weeds – not such a pretty sight really. As I put in each new bed I’m weeding it and the path on both sides, so it’s slowly getting better. This morning I prepared the bed for the cucumbers and planted 2 each of Telegraph Improved, Marketmore 86 and Cross Country.

These all came from Perennial Favorites, Jon Kreps nursery on Peabody Road in Appleton. We picked up the cucumbers, as well as cabbages, brussels sprouts, tomatoes, basil, parsley, broccoli yesterday. A lot of stuff to put in the ground.

Onions all in and more.

Filed under: Garden, Images, Onions, wordpress — admin @ 1:51 am

Slowly getting there. All the onions are in now, I put in 65 red onions yesterday (Sunday) which took about 3/4 of a bed. I filled up some of the left over space with shallots, it’ll be nice to see how the turn out. We planted some from seed last year or the year before, but I never got them in the ground.

We also laid out the new potato rows – 10 rows about 40 ft long. I’d like to get them all in the ground tomorrow.

Tomorrow we’re going to Albion at 10:00 to get the new bees.

And the owls are hooting away – and they woken up something else sounds more like it’s choking that anything else – wonder what that is.

I’d be posting more photos if the iPhoto plugin hadn’t broken for some reason. Perhaps it happened when I upgraded to 2.1.2? I should look into this…

More Onions

Filed under: Garden, Onions — admin @ 5:25 pm

Today and yesterday I put in another row of onions – this time Copra. Going slowly. The soil at the outside edge of this row is quite a bit more clay than the rest of the row…

Onions

Filed under: Garden, Onions — admin @ 9:07 pm

I picked up our onions from Perennial Favorites yesterday. I got one bed prepared and another nearly ready. I got the Varsity all in – about 85, and the Crystal White Wax onions too.

And cats. Arghh. Who wants cats pooping in the garden. Just nasty.
