Bees and Crickets

Filed under: Bees — hugo @ 8:19 pm

Some neighbors down the street asked me to come and help get a swarm this evening. I had to climb quite high up a ladder into the tree – the bees had gathered all along and around a branch. The swarm was probably about 2 feet long or more. I was hoping they’d be docile and easy to brush into the cardboard box I held under them but instead they started to sting. I climbed down and put on a long sleeved shirt and gloves, then climbed back up to get more. A few more stung me through the shirt, but it was much better the second time. I’m not sure if we got the queen – I guess they’ll see where the bees are tomorrow.

Tonight was also the first night we started to hear the crickets.

Bergemot

Filed under: Bergamot — hugo @ 7:05 am

The bergamot is in bloom. We’re going to try to make note of what is in bloom so that we can plan better for what to add or move in the garden.

Beets, Peas, Onions

Filed under: Cooking — hugo @ 8:44 pm

We’re eating more out of the garden these days. Tonight we had what must be about the last of the peas, onions (the wax crystal), beets (very baby beets, about the size of marbles) and beet greens.

Weeding and thinning

I hoed all the paths yesterday, and thinned the rutabagas and turnips. I thinned a few more beets too – they are actually getting small beets at the end now, pretty neat! I also removed the row cover from the brassicas – it was holding them down – I need to put it back on more loosely today or the dreaded worms will be back. Some of the kohlrabi are as big as tennis balls – I’m not sure how big they are when they’re ready.

Things aren’t looking that bad. I do need to put up trellises for the tomatoes – I think by next weekend that’ll have to be done. There’s no sign yet of potato bugs, that’s a relief.

Beets

Here’s a photos of the bed with the beets (and the few Swiss Chard plants that made it from the first sowing – I’ve since planted a few more that are just coming up).

Picked our first onions

We’ve started picking the first onions – the Crystal White Wax.

Buzzin’ Bees

The bees have been busy – I need to feel the supers on the middle colony and see how heavy it is.

Sunflowers and Mowing

Filed under: Sunflowers — hugo @ 11:40 am

The grass has really started to grow again after last week’s rains. After doing some mowing I took a hoe down to the Sunflowers and did a good cleaning out. I think they’re going to look pretty good in a few weeks.

Weeds!

Filed under: Weeds — hugo @ 10:12 pm

Lots of weeds. Not much time to week. But we did pick some Lambs Quarters and put them in a Fritatta along with Beet Greens and they were really good. Too bad we can’t eat all our weeds.
