Today I planted the carrots in the cold frames. I should have done this three weeks ago! I planted Napoli from Johnny’s.
I hoed all the paths yesterday, and thinned the rutabagas and turnips. I thinned a few more beets too - they are actually getting small beets at the end now, pretty neat! I also removed the row cover from the brassicas - it was holding them down - I need to put it back on more loosely today or the dreaded worms will be back. Some of the kohlrabi are as big as tennis balls - I’m not sure how big they are when they’re ready.
Things aren’t looking that bad. I do need to put up trellises for the tomatoes - I think by next weekend that’ll have to be done. There’s no sign yet of potato bugs, that’s a relief.
In the bed between the leeks I’ve just planted 4 carrots, rutabagas and turnips. The carrots are Red Cored Chantenay and Tonda Di Parigi from Fedco, and Napoli and White Satin from Johnny’s. The rutabagas are Laurentian and the turnips are Red Round.
The Napoli carrots are really for planting later, in August, for wintering over, but I thought I’d try some now. The White Satins are Audrey’s request. I’ve given about a 1/3 of the bed to the carrots, 1/3 to the rutabagas, and 1/3 to the turnips.
