Moving more lettuce, planting tomatoes.

Yesterday I prepared two more beds and put tomatoes and basil in one bed, and lettuce transplants from the cold frames into another.

The tomatoes were a six pack of paste tomatoes -Bellstar, Orange Banana, Amish Paste, Roma, Grandma Mary’s Paste, and Heinz 2653. There was room at the end of the row for two more so I put in two Rose de Berne .

In the next bed I transplanted three lettuce varieties from the cold frames: Blushed Butter Cos, Really Red Deer Tongue Gene-Pool Lettuce OG, and Les Orielles du Diable OG (Devil’s Ear) Lettuce OG

Moving Lettuce

Didn’t get nearly as much done as planned today because we went to a friend’s farm where they were raising a timber framed cabin. When we got back I ended up just moving the Revolution and Cracoviensis lettuces from the cold frame where I sowed them on March 30th. I planted them 3 across the bed, 10″ apart in the row, and they look great. I had two of the Cracoviensis left over, couldn’t bring my self to throw them out so I found room for them in front of the cucumbers.

Lots of Leeks (and Potatoes too)

144 Bleu de Solaize leeks in the fourth bed from the top in the second garden, where I had potatoes last year. These are the leeks I plan to over-winter. I still need to put in the Lincoln leeks. So much to do.

Three more varieties of potato in the new garden – Katahdin, Bintje, and Keuke Gold

Yesterday (catching up)

Filed under: Garden — admin @ 3:07 pm

I got up early and as I had no clients to see, spent the day preparing and planting four more beds in the main garden; the lower 4 beds on the right. In the first bed I planted half with Swiss Chard (Bright Lights) and the other half with two varieties of Beets (Red Ace and Bulls Blood).

In the second bed I planted seven cabbages – Danish Ballhead. I see from Fedco’s page that they don’t have the strain available this year – but I’m pretty sure the seeds came from there anyway. Odd.

In the third bed I planted pole beans – 4 hills each of Fortex and Aunt Jean’s Pole Bean.

The fourth bed I didn’t put anything in yet – but I think that since it will be in the shade of the pole beans, it might be a good one for putting lettuces in.

Lupins made me shout.

Walking back from hoeing the trench for two rows of potatoes (more on that later) I suddenly saw the first lupin in bloom. Out of the blue, it was quite a shock. Anyone watching would have wondered what was going on as I exclaimed, “Oh!” in surprise.

Sunflowers

Yesterday I planted Sunflowers on the strip we had Jim till along the edge of the meadow bordering the road. 1 packet of Mammoth Grey Stripe, two packets of Sunflower Sampler and a packet of Goldfinger Mexican Sunflower.

We got a little rain, but not much at all. Some more would be nice. Oh, and the grass needs cutting. What a surprise.

Potatoes

Forgot to mention yesterday I put in four rows of potatoes: Austrian Crescent (bought from Fedco), and three from our own seed potatoes; Ozette, Green Mountain and Purple Peruvian. Only six more rows to do in the new plot Jim tilled for us.

Cucumbers and weeds

The garden really does have a lot of weeds – not such a pretty sight really. As I put in each new bed I’m weeding it and the path on both sides, so it’s slowly getting better. This morning I prepared the bed for the cucumbers and planted 2 each of Telegraph Improved, Marketmore 86 and Cross Country.

These all came from Perennial Favorites, Jon Kreps nursery on Peabody Road in Appleton. We picked up the cucumbers, as well as cabbages, brussels sprouts, tomatoes, basil, parsley, broccoli yesterday. A lot of stuff to put in the ground.
