Harvesting - and the Common Ground Fair

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

We’ve had two or three nights of light ground frost - most of the tomatoes are in. The beets are still nice and sweet. I might get one more batch of the Haricot Vert beans in - that would be nice. Laurie and Audrey picked all the Basil plants, they are now sitting in buckets in the porch. The potatoes are looking pretty good too - the Katahdin in particular has died back and are a nice size. Perhaps we’ll do those tomorrow if the weather is nice. I brought all the onions in over the past week and they are up in the barn curing.

We’re off to the Common Ground fair is a few minutes. It’s foggy now but that’s supposed to lift. Audrey’s going to be mad mad mad if it doesn’t - the majority of her class took the day off yesterday and went on a sunny hot day.

Picked our first onions

We’ve started picking the first onions - the Crystal White Wax.

Onions all in and more.

Slowly getting there. All the onions are in now, I put in 65 red onions yesterday (Sunday) which took about 3/4 of a bed. I filled up some of the left over space with shallots, it’ll be nice to see how the turn out. We planted some from seed last year or the year before, but I never got them in the ground.

We also laid out the new potato rows - 10 rows about 40 ft long. I’d like to get them all in the ground tomorrow.

Tomorrow we’re going to Albion at 10:00 to get the new bees.

And the owls are hooting away - and they woken up something else sounds more like it’s choking that anything else - wonder what that is.

I’d be posting more photos if the iPhoto plugin hadn’t broken for some reason. Perhaps it happened when I upgraded to 2.1.2? I should look into this…

White onions all in and Bees to pick up too.

Today and yesterday I put in another row of onions - this time Copra. Going slowly. The soil at the outside edge of this row is quite a bit more clay than the rest of the row…

Onions

I picked up our onions from Perennial Favorites yesterday. I got one bed prepared and another nearly ready. I got the Varsity all in - about 85, and the Crystal White Wax onions too.

And cats. Arghh. Who wants cats pooping in the garden. Just nasty.
