Nice shapes as the skunk cabbage comes up through the mud.

Snow
Well – we got between 12″ and 14″ of snow. It’s melting away pretty fast, but still quite deep out there. I cleared the snow off the cold frames yesterday and today went up to check them out. As I opened the lights, the warm smell of recently worked soil came out – what a nice contrast to the snow that was piled right up to the top of the frames. The radishes and peas have germinated already.

Snowdrops
Our snowdrops (Galanthus) came back yesterday. We planted them in the fall of 2004. In the spring of 2005 they didn’t bloom, but last year they did. I wondered if they’d stick around – and they’re back. Aren’t they great?

Long Winter
After a slow, warm start, this past winter turned out to be a long cold one. The snow is almost gone now and, as you can see from the photos below, the crocuses and skunk cabbage are coming up. And the nettles too – I should post a photo of the new nettles too. They’re what I was planting when I got the bad case of poison ivy last fall. Oh – and the chives are coming up too! The bees are starting to fly again as well.
I need to figure out where the potatoes will go this year. I really don’t want them in the main garden. Perhaps we’ll dig beds next to the Raspberry bed. The meadow really is sodden right now though.
